RIGA
Riga is the capital and the largest city of Latvia. With 641,007 inhabitants (2015). Riga is the largest city of the Baltic states.
PLACES TO VISIT
- Freedom monument: The freedom monument is considered on symbol of Latvia. It is a 42 meters tall monument crowned by a young lady called Mildaung woman is holding three golden stars that symbolize the provinces of Kurzeme, Vidzeme and Latgale. The monument is built to honour soldiers who were killed during the Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920).
- The central market: visit the Central market and do a 2hour Tasting Food Tour. Doing this tour visitors will discover the most traditional Latvian cuisine and the history of the Central Market.
- Jewish synagogue: The synagogue was built in 1904 and it is a wonderful piece of Art Nouveau architecture. It is the only synagogue that survived the Nazi occupation.
MUSEUMS
- Aviation museum: The Aviation Museum is an impressive collection of Soviet air power. There are old Russian fighter jets, supersonic bombers, helicopters…
- Art Noveau Museum: The Art Nouveau Museum was opened on April 23rd, 2009. This museum is located inside a 1903 house where the Konstantīns Pēkšēns (a Latvian architect ) lived until 1907.
FOOD AND TYPICAL DISHES
- Rosols: combination of pickled vegetables, potatoes and a lot of mayonnaise, mustard and horseradish.
- Pelēkie zirņi (grey peas): Big grey peas boiled and then fried with bacon usually served with sour cream.
